Brian Eno – words on interactive art

I have watched the documentary once again after seeing it on a screening session on 201. I was listening what he is saying on diversity of art and its living through the interaction.

He wanted to take music away from being abstract collection of sounds. He wanted to make them like places that you have been to. To make it sound like a place that you have experienced before. He used to call them “imaginary landscapes”.

Later in his creative work he was carrying with his motto which is “going to the extreme and retrieve back to a useful position. What was understood as artistic behaviour was to go to the extreme and to defend it and occupy it. For Brian it is not the most interesting place to be. I t is interesting that somebody has been there, and you want to know what he saw there. He wants to know all about the bandry conditions and they influence me because they allow for some things that are possible. Like having a space in a piece of music.

Variety of art

He was saying some interesting thing about the natural organisms. And I realized that :All of them are so different and the variety of creatures is enormous. And all of them were created through the same forces: wind, light, fire and soil.

His another think thought was about the Pollock painting and if you would see another one that is exactly the same, that would be surprising as the fist one was made through chaotic strokes but the second one would have to be done very precisely with a one hair brush.

Context makes it different each time it’s approached

Film music is a full fill for the action. It is there to support the action, and the action is missing when you just listen to it on a record. It’s just a context without action,  When you just hear the soundtrack without seeing the action, it allows you to construct your own picture.

Technology makes variety

He wants to put some serious attention when he is making a music. The think about the machines is that instead of reproducing something again and again perfectly we use them to produce something different again and again. We use then to generate variety rather then fixing something in place.

Interaction with a viewer

He likes systems that make use of the brain. The watchers brain is a process of emotions and of art being not a quality of things but the name of a type of interaction between you and something or you and a event. If you start thinking about interaction. If freezes a lot of aesthetic problems. You don’t have to decide if something is or is not an art. All you have to know is whether it does to some people. and it can do it as a hit single for two and a half million people a month or a cathedral may do it for seven hundred people for seven hundred years.

Tegen – Arduino

Today i bought an Arduino UNO and four LED’s to start working on programming the interaction kits.  It was not easy to install the drivers on my computer and I had to ask for help of someone experienced. Mike has helped me with it. I  am still missing few bits like sound sensor and few others. But what I can start doing is to control the four lights with a webcam. Each of it would be a 25% of our maximum. The less dynamic movement will light up one LED and make it blinking and with just a half of its power, little more will light second one in the same way, more movement will light up the third LED and give more power to them and so on. Or something like that. So far the “blink” sketch works.

Tegen – the interaction points

  1. Mouse door in a wall – with a sound sensor and a speaker, you speak to it and its “pi pi pi” back.
  2. candle – with a sound sensor and a LED light. you blow and the light goes off
  3. sleeping cat – on the speaker with very low frequency that is covered with a table cloth lays a toy cat that vibrates as he was growling
  4. wind in the forest – that would be animation responding to viewers waving their arms above the heads.
  5. help with magic – that would be a lot of movement like jumping and dancing around to light up the LED’s and go on with the animation
  6. help with runs – the same LED’s and animation but on smaller scale, the audience will not have to be that active to perform the runes as with changing the fairy into a giant
  7. sign of a live – heart beat goes to speakers and the animation goes on.

I would need: about 30 -40 LED’s , a webcam, three sound sensors, one small speaker, one big speaker, at least 4 arduinos.

I got a pay from work so tomorrow I’m going to Maplin.:)

Tegen – the story telling

Today I was on a meeting with Katie Ness an artist who have an experience with story telling installations. We were talking about the project. My new concept is to make many other interaction and also the scenery will need to be something more than a screen with LED’s.

I came up with a thought, that new way of story telling is allowing to experience it.

And this TED video is very inspiring. It is about the interaction in new way of story telling and also how to use technology to create magic. Katie showed me this video.

Tegen – the proposal

My idea is to try achieve the feeling like the theater audience can have when watching the play. In modern theaters the audience is encouraged to take part in the play. It is not quite like being a character in the story but taking a side in a intrigue or having an impact to the story. My idea is to import this experience into a cinema.

The motion picture will be displayed on the screen with fixed LED’s. The lights will be different sizes and maybe different colours and displayed in a chosen place on the screen in a ready shape.  The interaction with the audience needs to be both ways. The audience has an impact on film but the effect of their action has impact back on them to increase their engagement.  The LED effects will encourage them to be more active, more dynamic and excited.

I am going to make one smaller interaction point in the middle of a story ( the magic of the runes) to teach the audience how to behave. It will use just a part of the LED’s and the second final interaction will be in the most exciting point of a story (when the fairy turns into a giant). To engage the audience emotionally I came up with a story. If take it seriously one could read that there is a lesson in it. It’s about women who are ready to turn themselves into a ruin for love, and nobody really appreciate that. I think it is moving and it is something to think of.

When doing the research for this project I couldn’t really find anything that combines the projected picture with the LED’s light. I can only imagine that the scene when the LED’s are turned on will need to be quite light and blury.
